Songwriting Lessons

Songwriting is often made out to be difficult, it's not! We will write several songs in your first lesson. The trick to it is finding inspiration and bridging that inspiration with your knowledge of music. Chord progression, melody, literature, the spoken word and studying how other songs are written are some of the things we'd work on. Whether you already play an instrument and want to learn to write songs or would like to integrate songwriting with your current instrumental studies, it is worthwhile regardless and can actually help you better understand your instrument as well as music as a whole.

Questions and Answers

What experience do you have teaching kids?

As far as experience teaching children, I've been working with children for close to 10 years now. I've worked with children as young as 3 years old all the way up until they go through high school. I've worked in magnet schools, charter schools and special needs children (autistic and asberger's). I have a lot of experience with all different types and greatly enjoy it.

How do your lessons for adults differ from lessons for children?

Lessons with adults differ from lessons I give to children, a lot of the time because children have their parents influencing what they work on in their lessons. For adults we choose the material that we study based on what you are looking for. If you want to learn piano and you want to learn Rachmaninov, that's what we'd do. We wouldn't do anything that you didn't want to do and unless you wanted me to suggest things I would normally base all the material around setting goals that you're interested in and want to accomplish and we'd find the most efficient way of making those goals happen.

What do you do during the first lesson?

So for a first lesson I normally prepare for your lesson by sending you a questionnaire asking you a bunch of questions about what you are interested in, what your goals are, what you want to accomplish with the lessons. And I look that over before we go into our first lesson normally we just hit the ground running figuring out what you want to do and start working towards that. I'm extremely patient. I firmly believe anyone can learn how to play music. I just try to keep things simple, we figure out what you want to do and we find a way to make that happen.
