Flute Lessons

My focus is on each student's individual strengths and needs. I tailor my teaching style to their goals and interests while implementing the fundamentals of good musicianship and proper flute playing. I encourage students to seek out music that they would like to study, and I teach all of my students how to practice efficiently so they progress as quickly as possible.

I expect all students to keep a notebook. In this notebook, I will write out specific assignments for the week, to be practiced and performed at the following lesson. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing your hard work pay off, and staying organized is one of the best ways to make progress!

I love music and I love working with people. Teaching is a great way to combine both. Whether you are a parent looking for your middle-school children or whether you are an adult who would like to pick up a new hobby, I look forward to hearing from you to set up our free 30-minute trial lesson!

BIOGRAPHY:

Southern California-based flutist Melanie Lançon maintains a dynamic career performing across the country as an orchestral and chamber musician, as well as recording for television and film in the studios of Los Angeles. In recent months, she has been invited to perform as Guest Principal with Seattle, Fort Worth, Pacific, and South Dakota Symphony Orchestras as well as Louisiana Philharmonic, and joined WindSync on their Midwest tour and Schubert Club residency in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is currently filling the role of Principal Flute with Long Beach Opera, and looks forward to performing with Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach for their 2017 summer season.

From 2013 to 2016, Melanie held the position of Principal Flute of Central City Opera in Colorado, and was Acting 2nd Flute in Utah Symphony|Utah Opera during the 2014-15 season. She was previously a member of the New World Symphony in Miami, where she worked closely with Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas. He described her as a “beguiling player…full of spontaneity”, and she was praised for her “dazzling performances, infused with depth of both technique and interpretation” by South Florida Classical Review.

Melanie served as Guest Principal Flute with Seattle Symphony Orchestra during the 2013-14 season, where she performed Ravel’s complete Daphnis et Chloe under Music Director Ludovic Morlot for the 2014 League of American Orchestras National Conference. Additionally, she recorded Dutilleux’s Symphony No. 2 “Le double” with the orchestra on their Grammy award-winning album “Dutilleux 2”, and was noted in Memeteria for her “beautiful playing of the arresting improvisatory flute passage” in the North American premiere of Pascal Dusapin’s Violin Concerto with Renaud Capuçon as soloist.

Having secured her first orchestral position at the age of 23 as Principal Flute of the Baton Rouge Symphony, she has since performed with several ensembles across the country, including Camerata Pacifica, Pacific Symphony, American Ballet Theatre, Houston Grand Opera/Ballet, National Repertory Orchestra, and Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She has collaborated with such distinguished conductors as Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, and has shared the stage with celebrated artists Renee Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and Gil Shaham, among others. In addition, she has worked with renowned composers John Adams and John Williams on a number of occasions.

Melanie has been a key performer on numerous broadcasts and recordings. She is featured in Peter Shickele’s 2006 video production P.D.Q. Bach in Houston: We Have a Problem! and as solo flutist in the film “Domus”, which accompanies designer John Saladino’s book featuring his Santa Barbara home, Villa. She was highlighted on CBS Miami in 2012, and can be heard on recordings with Seattle, Utah, and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras.

In addition to her performance experience, Melanie is recognized as a passionate music educator. She has given guest lectures to the flute studio at Louisiana State University and was invited to be a Featured Artist and Masterclass Instructor at the 2005 Louisiana Flute Society Convention. During her fellowship with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Melanie was an active member of MusiCorps, a community engagement group which involved teaching music classes in the Chicago City Colleges and elementary schools. In addition, she created and organized educational programs for young audiences as coordinator of the JUMP! outreach program at Rice University. She served as Adjunct Professor of Flute at New World School of the Arts at Miami-Dade College from 2013-2014.

Born and raised in Louisiana, Melanie received her Master’s degree from Rice University and earned her Bachelor’s degree with honors from Northwestern University, where she won the 2002 Concerto Competition. She credits her musical journey and influence to her wonderful teachers – Timothy Day, Walfrid Kujala, and Leone Buyse, and of course her very first flute teacher, Jill Swetnam.
