Bass Lessons

I provide a broad understanding of the instrument, with years of study to back it up, taking a conceptual, theoretical, technical and applicable approach, while promoting the most important aspect: creativity. I get to the root of what you need to know eliminating excess, in order to speed up the learning process. Nothing comes from an academic place, but a natural place of creative. It is later turned into an academic presentation over time. The purpose is to study with a natural presentation that makes learning easy and not so academic. The end goal is taking knowledge of what originators created and eventually internalize it, making it your own so you can innovate. romangmusic.com

Overview

Roman Gastelum is a diverse bassist, vocalist and composer based in Los Angeles, CA. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, studying bass under Putter Smith. His influences range from jazz, hip-hop, classical, alternative/indie and pop music, and is inspired by artists and composers such as Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Paul Chambers, George Russell, Bach, Edgar Meyer, A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B. & Rakim, Mos Def, to James Brown, Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Arctic Monkeys, Cut Copy and many more.

Having recorded and performed with many artists and musicians, as well as perusing his own music on many notable stages (House of Blues, The Roxy, The Whiskey, The Mint etc.) in and outside of the LA area, he began his musical journey at 8 years old in the renown Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus. This developed his ear and an understanding of harmony at a young age, eventually taking him to New York City singing in an honors choir. When he was 12 years old, he showed an interest in the bass guitar and decided to pick it up and quickly began expanding his musical palette. The love for the instrument carried on strongly throughout his teenage years where he performed in his acclaimed high school jazz band for all four years, taking him to local competitions, as well as performing in cities like Chicago.

Roman furthered his musical education attending college at Musicians Institute and earned his Bachelor Degree in music performance, studying upright bass under Putter Smith, and electric bass with bassists such as Brian Allen, Stu Hamm and Ernest Tibbs. He also took on a strong interest studying jazz under Joe Bagg and Jamie Rosenn, and arranging with Peter Hume. Roman is active on the Los Angeles music scene today whether he is recording, performing live on stage, an enthusiastic private lesson instructor, or involved in persuing his own music such as his anticipated passion project Jigsaw Falling, who have recently released a new EP. > romangmusic.com
