Music composition Lessons

I focus on improving your compositional skills through a mixture of both the theoretical and creative sides of composing. You will be learning about song structure, harmony, melody and counterpoint. On the creative side, I encourage you to be less self-critical. We are our own worst enemies. And while it doesn't hurt to critique your work, sometimes that hinders the process. I encourage you to take chances, live a little! You never know what music is out there waiting to be created.
Lastly, I look greatly forward to working with each of you!

Overview

I have played piano since I was three years old, when I asked my parents to take me to a piano lesson. Since then, it has been an amazing, self-fulfilling process. I think I'm a far better person because of what music has done for me, and I would love for my students to feel the same way! I went to the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music and earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Piano in 2016. I'm patient and adaptable as a teacher and will always listen to my students' needs to the best of my ability. I hope to foster meaningful connections with each and every one of you and help you reach your goals.

Creativity

Playing piano involves a great many number of skills. One of these, particularly for pop/jazz players is the ability to create engaging art in the moment. When it is finally your turn to take a solo on "Autumn Leaves," you may draw a blank, but I know you know the notes. Forget right and wrong. There are melodies flowing through your brain, trust me. Just hear what is right in front of you. If you never play, you will never learn!

Posture/Effort

My jazz elements teacher at USC always used to say, "play the piano, don't let it play you." Meaning, don't try so dang hard! There is a sweet spot in terms of effort expended - not so much that your hunched over the piano and your forearms are burning after a minute of playing, but not so little that there is barely a peep coming from the instrument. Let your fingers do the work. They are stronger than you might think.

Piano Lessons

Me Max B. Hope this review reaches you. I've attempted several times to contact through Number provided on website and have been unsuccessful. In any case I like what I read on your profile, and I'm searching for piano lessons for my seven year old son. I know you typically teach adults. And am asking if you Would make an exception for my son. Give it try! He's been taking piano for over a year and can read music. He's had an instructor in the past, in search for a new one. Piano Lessons

I have not taken a lesson from Max, but I have seen him perform live many times, both as a soloist and as part of different groups. He can play many styles of music, plus write and play his own compositions. He is really an amazing musician. He seems to really know his theory, and his playing skills are up there with the best. If you are a student who wants to learn how to really play the piano "musically", he is your guy. He can teach you anything from reading music and basic keyboard and performance skills all the way to how to compose your own music. I highly recommend him.
