Rodrigo Barcenas: Bass player, audio engineer, music-lover and producer, born in Mexico D.F. on February 16, 1990.
Rodrigo was surrounded by music at a young age. At home with his grandparents, Rodrigo loved playing with musical instruments, such as the piano, guitar and the marimba… anything that could create a musical sound.
He began to play the drums at 12 years of age and was a part of various musical projects, such as: Xplosion, Hell Army, Draft Duster, and The Red Stones. All of which began his introduction to the bass guitar.
At the age of 20, he stepped in to a music room headed by Musical Engineer Salvador Tercero. It was then that he had the opportunity to work with great musicians and where, finally, he was inspired to make music his life. He had the opportunity to work alongside musicians, such as Iraida Noriega, Enrique Nery, Ximena Sariñana, Ely Guerra, Armando Manzanero, Lila Downs, Chavela Vargas, and composed music for the Bicentennial events of the Symphonic Orchestra of Mexico.
Immediately after working with great musicians and then meeting Aaron Cruz and Marco Renteria – life-long friends, teachers, and role models – Rodrigo started taking classes to improve his bass skills. Classes improved his skills in instrumental theory and practice.
Circa 2012, Rodrigo became a full-time musician focused on eventually becoming a professional.
His first project, “Bufalo” – a mix of Rock-and-Roll and improvisation – further fueled his passion for the bass guitar.
Motivated by the opportunity to learn something new every day, his love for music extends to a wide range of musical tastes. Rodrigo refuses to stick to one specific genre and instead strives to be a versatile bass player, always willing to learn and willing to share his musical talents.
He has fulfilled multiple skills-enhancing courses with instructors, including: Abraham Labroiel, Alain Caron, Pepe Hernandez. One-on-one lessons with some of the best bass players: Victor Wooten, Marco Mendoza, Tony Grey, Evan Marien, Tony Saunders, and David & Felix Pastorius via skype. And has also mastered contemporary sound influenced by Dick Grove and Nicholas Slonimsky thanks to the teachings of Professor Tony Bravo.
Available for all kinds of projects – live or in-studio – Rodrigo also offers one-on-one music sessions, clinics, and master classes where he teaches the basics of how to use the instrument as well as audio and digital resources.
Rodrigo has also collaborated with Montevideo, Vyvek, Fermin trio, Gaston project (La Voz Mexico), Hard Groove trio, Dirty Lobo, Elastico World Beat, Elis Paprika, recorded and produced Le Fly alongside Luis de la Torre.
Currently, he is working on producing his first solo record. Living in Los Angeles, California.
