Voice Lessons

Every lesson will cover vocal health and exercise, muscle memory, musicianship, and repertoire chosen by the student and instructor.

I believe that vocal students should be exposed to several styles of music including classical, operatic, music theater, and, yes, even pop music. A well-rounded singer, with the ability to perform in multiple styles, will have an easier, more free and fun, time expressing themselves; even in their favorite style.

My approach to my own singing and the primary goal of my lessons for all my students is 'free-singing.' Singing should never hurt, it should feel good, the voice should feel free to express, and be fun and enjoyable for the singer and audience.

Overview

My first exposure to music was in 5th grade when I took up the trumpet in band. I loved the trumpet and I always felt like I was 'singing' through my instrument. I continued with band through high school and joined marching band, but during high school I decided to try performing in the school's musicals and even joined choir; and I loved this even more!

During my undergraduate studies at the University of Mary Washington I took vocal lessons for the first time and enrolled in the summer Opera festival called 'Operafest.' Performers had backgrounds ranging from high school through professional and I was absolutely blown away on stage standing side by side with brilliant singers. I remember thinking to myself, more like praying, "God, I wish I could be like that one day!"

Since then I have gone on to receive my Masters in Music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. I have shared the stage and studied with Professionals who have sung at the Metropolitan Opera. I have performed on stage in Washington D.C., Richmond VA, Astoria OR, and Chicago IL. I have performed the roles of Martin in Aaron Copland's The Tender Land and Tamino in Mozart's Die Zauberfloete among many others.

I have been studying voice for over 12 years. Let me share what I have learned with you.
