Voice Lessons

I specialize in teaching classical vocal technique, which means most students start by learning a classical song or two. From there, we transition to studying music the student wishes to sing alongside these classical songs to make sure the technique stays consistent across styles. Healthy vocal technique is universal, and essential for being able to sing for long periods of time without getting tired and maintaining a strong voice with age.

Conducting Lessons

My conducting experience is mostly with choirs, but I have worked with orchestras in the past, as well. Lessons include examining standard repertoire, learning score study techniques, and rehearsal techniques for any foreseeable situation during a rehearsal.

Guitar Lessons

Beginner lessons typically begin with working out of a lesson book (such as Hal Leonard's Complete Edition) to learn the basics, while being supplemented with material from other sources. The focus is to build a solid technique and understanding of the guitar (and music itself) that can be applied to any styles. The more advanced the student is, the more outside material we will focus on.

Music theory Lessons

This is a heavily-academic topic. Most of the lessons are discussion-based, with beginners being taught the basics of scales, chords, and musical forms. More advanced students learn more about counterpoint, advanced chord progressions, larger forms (such as fugues), and any other topics that may come up. All lessons will involve analyzing music to show how all discussed materials have been implemented throughout history.

Music composition Lessons

This is the most individualistic of all music lessons. Students bring in music they have written for discussion, analysis, and suggestions for improvement. Other activities include listening, analyzing the work of other composers, and compositional challenges designed to force composers out of their comfort zone.

Overview

I am a professional performer, composer, and educator based in Louisville, Kentucky. I am originally from Florida; I relocated to Louisville to pursue my Masters of Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Louisville. Prior to that, I studied Vocal Performance at the University of North Florida.

I have performed alongside the Louisville Chamber Choir, Louisville Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and Brevard Symphony Orchestra, and have toured internationally with the prestigious University of Louisville Cardinal Singers under the direction of Dr. Kent Hatteberg. I have conducted the University of Louisville Collegiate Chorale and University Chorus, as well as the University of North Florida Chamber Singers and Osprey Men’s Chorus.

Teaching is my job; this is not a side gig, but a full-time profession. When I'm not teaching, I am usually composing for choral ensembles, combining my love for Renaissance Italian madrigals with progressive rock and metal to create new, exciting sounds from choirs, or spending entirely too much time playing LEGO Batman with my five year old.
