Piano Lessons

I studied piano as a secondary instrument during high school and college. I love teaching it to beginners and providing them with a solid foundation for further advanced study.

Voice Lessons

I advocate a tension-free approach to technique, geared toward uncovering one's unique, authentic voice. This aporoach can be applied to any genre of music that the student is interested in working on. Music is about self-expression: it is my goal to help you express yourself through your voice without any difficulty, tension or imitation. See The Naked Voice by W. Stephen Smith for more information on the methods I will employ in voice lessons.

Musical theater Lessons

I have an extensive background in musical theater after working with high school students for four years. I started out in MT and apply the same fundamental technique here as I would with opera students - just with more belting!

Overview

Hi, Everyone! I am an operatic lyric soprano with a B.A. in Music from Hunter College (2016). I currently study voice privately with Dr. Claudia Friedlander in Manhattan. I reside in New Jersey with my alien-cat, Meeko. Most of my teaching background comes from working with high school students on musical theater repertoire. During college, I was the Assistant Director of Obsessed! Productions, a company that provided musical theater performance opportunities for North Bergen High School (NJ) students. From 2011-2015, I led music rehearsals and planned our rehearsal schedules, in addition to doing voice lessons individually with all of the students in the productions. We put on cabarets and fully staged productions, such as Rent (2013) and Little Shop of Horrors (2015).

As a performer, I have starred in both operatic (Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni) and musical theater (Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, Titanic the Musical) productions throughout high school and college.

I love teaching musical theater and opera, but I am open to teaching pop as well! For me, singing is like yoga - it is a daily practice that helps us get in touch with our truest and most authentic self. Technique is really just there to serve you and help you get out of your head and into the music!

A few facts: (1) one of my operatic dream roles is Donna Elvira in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, (2) I am very interested in Astrology and can probably guess your sun sign (and maybe moon) at our first lesson!

Philosophy

Singing is speaking plus airflow. Most teachers over-complicate singing and make the idea of "technique" sound like an impossible concept to grasp. If we can speak without vocal strain or fatigue, then why can't we sing? I believe EVERYONE can sing. My technique will enable you to release your breath fully and connect with your voice in order to sing with as much authenticity as you speak with each day.

Studio Information

We begin each lesson with two seemingly simple warm-ups that serve as the basis of most of what we'll work on with actual repertoire. Beware though: they are deceivingly difficult! Most people catch on after a few lessons, but even after doing these for a few years myself, I still find ways to make them challenging and keep me from "faking" or "pushing" to create what I think my voice should sound like. The first exercise focuses on connecting you with your voice by speaking on pitch. No making sound or "singing" allowed here!

In the second exercise, we'll move on to an airflow exercise designed to teach you how to take in a breath fully and then release it. If you can do both of these things at once with freedom and coordination, then you are on your way to being able to sing any piece of music that you desire!
