Voice Lessons

I teach the Blaylock Vocal Method. Developed at the Northwest Institute of Voice by Thomas R. Blaylock, it is a systematic approach to vocal
development and you will work with an exercise booklet and CD. This technique is revolutionary. It can
teach you how to find and maintain a clear and fully resonant sound every day (either speaking or
singing). When your voice is “under the weather”, you will learn how to work with it so you don’t have
to stop using it to let it heal.

One thing I enjoy about teaching is coming up with creative ways to teach or explain a new concept. I might use singing, motions, art, story telling or games to help a student understand a new concept. I also like to think of creative extra assignments to help a student dive deeper into music. I might ask them to draw a picture or write a story that represents the song they are learning, or write a song, or complete an art project about the new concept.

I try to adapt my teaching method to what the individual student's needs are their learning style.

I also think that it is important for students to get to play music with other people and so students are encouraged to play in their own bands. At the end of the year we put on a recital, where the stu-dents get to show off what they’ve been learning and be acknowledged and encouraged. This is all very exciting for the students. Preparing for the recital is part of our lessons and performing in the recietal is optional. Most of all, I love teaching because I get to connect as a friend to each student as they grow as a musician and a performer. My goal is that through learning about music, each student grows as a person and builds their love of music and their confidence.
For Ukulele I teach:

• through the Ukulele in the Classroom se-ries, Alfred Ukulele series, and my own curriculum
• note reading
• sight reading
• technique
• performance techniques
• theory
• Strumming chords & Playing melodies
• how to play in a band

Music composition Lessons

I teach composition with GarageBand for iPad or Mac. GarageBand is a software tool that is constantly developing and students love working with this software! They are engaged and motivated while learning with these tools from the very first class, and they can create their own music, no matter how much experience they have.
Students will also create their own compositions from scratch, using all available features of the software.
We’ll use all elements of GarageBand to create exciting music, and students will use composition as a vehicle for learning other aspects of musicianship as well, such as instrumentation, form, melody and harmony.
