Piano Lessons

My students can expect my lessons to be fun and engaging, but to learn a firm grasp of fundamentals, theory, sightreading, good practice habits, and to develop a good ear. My goal is to give my students the necessary tools they will need to continue to grow as a musician long after they have ended their lessons with me. My methods usually center around using a variety of method books. Many students want to simply learn songs that they like; I am fine with teaching songs, and will incorporate pertinent theory and technique lessons as we learn songs.

Bass Lessons

I have been playing upright and electric bass for the last 21 years (about 12 professionally) and they are my primary instruments, unlike many people that teach bass who are first and foremost guitar players. I have played with and recorded with many of Austin's top artists. The approach and mindset is completely different. I strive to help my students become complete musicians. This entails a firm grasp of fundamentals, technique, theory, improvisation, ear training, solid time feel and generly fitting into the rest of the ensemble.

Music composition Lessons

Most students that start to compose on their own already have a few ideas that they have worked out on their instrument. Under my instruction you will learn to develop these ideas and to arrange them into clear compositional thoughts. In my opinion a strong knowledge of music theory, keyboard/piano, and a well trained ear will greatly improve one's success as a composer. We will work on all of these aspects if the student is deficient in either of these areas. On top of the actual composing of motifs and development, we will also work on orchestration - the assigning of specific pitches and parts to specific instuments. A knowledge of each instrument's strengths and weaknesses is needed in order to successfully orchestrate a piece of music. In my lessons we will often times study scores as we listen to gain a firm grasp of what has worked in the past and what continues to work effectively. Producing pop music is slightly different, but it is my opinion that many of the same qualities one would have to develop to compose are very easily transferred to producing and arranging pop music.

Overview

I grew up in Southern California and started playing alto saxophone when I was 10. After picking up bass at age 12 I began to get more serious about music and started to develop a deep interest in jazz. Once in high school I continued to play bass and sax and also picked up singing in choir (as well as assisting directing the JV choir) and some percussion. Later in my high school I began to develop an interest in composition and playing piano; eventually I moved to Austin to study jazz composition at the Butler School of Music, UT Austin. Since then I have had the privelege of playing with some really remarkable artists and pursing bass and piano as my primary instruments, as well as arranging, composing and some producing. I absolutely love performing as well as teaching music in all aspects. The joy I get when I see the lightbulb "click" in a student's brain makes my job extremely rewarding. Currently I teach piano, bass and guitar as well as perform throughout the city; and have aspirations to do more producing and film scoring as well.
