Piano Lessons

We will always start with scales and technique exercises, follow up with theory, and work to improve sight-reading abilities along with whatever particular piece has been assigned.

Saxophone Lessons

My biggest emphasis when it comes to the saxophone is improving one's sound as any saxophonist can tell you it's the toughest aspect of mastering this particular wind instrument. Thus, my students find themselves working for sometimes as much as half the lesson on being able to improve their tone and finding a good mouthpiece/setup. No matter what genre they are interested in playing, a full timbre is essential and the difference between a decent player and an amazing one.

Overview

There are very few things in life that get me as excited as when I get the opportunity to share my knowledge with someone else. I've taught private music lessons since I was 11 -- over 20 years ago -- and I wake up every day wanting to do more teaching! I'm patient, I connect well with people of all walks of life, and as a father of three, I absolutely love kids. I teach everything from beginning piano, saxophone, and bass students through university level musicians seeking more advanced composition, improvisation, and theory knowledge.

As a three-time Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist and composer, I am proficient on saxophone, clarinet, flute, upright bass, electric bass, and piano. In 2006, I graduated with a degree in Jazz Composition with an emphasis in Saxophone Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. For some time in the mid-2000's, I formed a big band in the Central Texas region that played my original compositions exclusively. In 2015, my music was the centerpiece of a Hollywood film which is currently in pre-production stages.

My Methods

For beginning students, I emphasize fundamentals, including technique, sound quality, and reading. With children, I like to start with method books such as Essential Elements or the John Thompson series for piano. For more advanced pupils, I will start with what they are currently working on, find areas for improvement, and then adjust the curriculum accordingly. However, no matter what the students interests or skill level are, I try and keep the lessons light, fun, and interesting!

My Teaching Style

It is my philosophpy that all people have the capacity to learn -- although not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way. I believe in student-centric teaching meaning I try to find out what the student's goals are and then modify my curriculum to their unique learning style. No two lessons are the same!
