Pop Piano and Composition Lessons

Piano Lessons

Few people realize that in order to actually play the piano, you have to develop several different skills, and those skills all have to work together simultaneously and in harmonious balance.

My job as a teacher is to guide each student through a series of incremental steps designed to develop the following skills over time (and this is by no means a complete list!):

* Physical strength, dexterity, and coordination (mostly in the fingers, hands, and arms)
* An awareness and mastery of rhythm, which is really a combination of physical timing, mental anticipation, and being able to listen while you are playing
* Tone (which is related to the physical skills mentioned above) but also combines with the listening ability. "Tone" can be quite subjective, but it's all about going beyond the notes and learning to play in a way that is pleasant to the ear of your audience, whoever that may be.
* Good Practice Habits! - Yes, good teachers actually have to teach students exactly HOW to practice independently, in a manner that produces results.
* Inspiration and Motivation - I know that this seems strange. Most people don't think of these as teachable skills, but they are SOOO important to keep refueling and generating the energy required to practice and perform well

I teach all of the above skills and more, in a comprehensive, integrated manner. But I also try to balance those objectives with each student's individual goals. Not everyone wants to be the next Lang Lang. Whatever your goals, I will help you achieve them.

Songwriting Lessons

The ability to MAKE music is what I am most passionate about, and it's the lens from which I view all other musical skills. Music Theory, Arrangement, and Composition are all different focuses within the creative side of music making. Songwriting incorporates the additional skill set of lyric writing (closely related to poetry). I will show you how to take a simple idea and develop it into a song or composition - and how to make your next song or composition the epic masterpiece you aspire it to be.

Music theory Lessons

I include music theory as an aspect of all songwriting/music composition and piano lessons as I believe it is a required tool for mastery of those subjects. For musicians who are already studying these subjects, and would like further tutoring or help in understanding Music Theory specifically, I am happy to provide additional guidance.

Overview

I am a pianist. I am also a keyboardist, programmer, and music producer. But the title I probably most identify with is "composer." I realized early on that my own passion for performing was fueled by my hunger to actually CREATE music. So I set out to learn from the masters. I won competitions and scholarships in high school, then double-majored in piano and composition at the University of Kansas where I obtained my bachelor's degree, before going on to record, write, and produce rock & electronic music.

Teaching Philosophy

I love being a CREATOR of music; and that love just extends quite naturally into the collaborative creative process we have come to know as “teaching.” There is no greater joy than creating music...except maybe seeing someone else I have trained and inspired create something of their own...on their own...without my help. The way I teach focuses on each individual student's personality. I try to tailor lessons and assignments to each student, as well as introduce them to a variety of music styles.

Ian is a very professional, organized teacher who comes to each lesson with a purpose and a wealth of knowledge for his students. He offers a nice balance of traditional training along with modern/contemporary styles of music, including the student's preferences as well. Ian has made piano a pleasant learning experience for my son.
