Piano Lessons

I strive to create a fun environment which balances encouraging creativity and imagination, while rooted in music fundamentals. I cater every lesson specifically to each student, but overall work to cultivate a love for playing music in a way that is most fun for the student. Depending on the needs of the student this may include listening to music, learning the students favorite songs, and creatively reimagining songs, in addition to building fundamental music skills like technique, ear training, and repertoire.

Overview

Hello! My name is Grant and I am a jazz trained keyboardist and vibraphonist (yes I play that also!). I grew up in the Bay Area playing classical piano for 8 years beginning when I was 4. Although I loved the piano at the time, I felt limited by the lack of creativity in the music I was playing, so in sixth grade, I began to teach myself jazz and improvisation. I took it very seriously in high school, and now this year graduated from UCLA with a degree in jazz performance and composition. Over the years I have studied with some incredible musicians and educators, who have not only shaped my playing, but taught me what it means to be a good teacher. I have also played with many amazing musicians and friends at some great venues, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, as well as venues all over Los Angeles like Catalina's Jazz Club, UCLA's Royce Hall, and many small clubs.
My teaching philosophy is that music must be fun and stress each of our own creative voices, because we are learning an art form. Yet in order to be great musicians we need to be technically proficient and have great listening skills, so that we can play what we hear and play with other musicians effectively. I also believe that learning music cultivates invaluable life skills, like dedication, motivation, listening, collaboration, and performance-based skills such as public speaking.
I love working with kids as well - I have worked at summer camps with kids aged 4-12, not to mention I have two brothers including a rambunctious younger one!
No two students are the same, and I am able to help you just jam with your friends or prepare for gigs and performances. Please don't hesitate to reach out to explain your or your child's needs and I will happily explore and discuss with you the best course of study. Thanks!
