Piano Lessons

Unless otherwise specified by my students, I teach the fundamentals of music in tandem with technique. I focus on helping the student understand what he or she is playing more than teaching by rote. Because of this method, my students take longer to "get results," as in, they learn specific pieces of music more slowly than if I were to just teach them the right order to play the notes. Instead, they learn how music functions and how to best use their instrument to make music. My hope is that my students will eventually be able to learn music without a teacher, to have the tools to write music if they want, to better understand what they play and hear, and to take this knowledge to their musical endeavors through the rest of their lives.

(For example: the student I had the longest was able to make creative, informed decisions about his keyboard playing in a church band. He was also teaching himself different instruments by mid high school.)

For the voice, this method of teaching leads me to focus on ear training and some music theory in addition to vocal technique. I teach posture and placement as well as sight-singing and solfege (do, re, mi).

Drums Lessons

Unless otherwise specified by my students, I teach the fundamentals of music in tandem with technique. I focus on helping the student understand what he or she is playing more than teaching by rote. Because of this method, my students take longer to "get results," as in, they learn songs more slowly than if I were to just teach them the right order to play what's written. Instead, they learn how music functions and how to best use their instrument to make music. My drum set experience is entirely in a "contemporary" worship setting at Protestant, Evangelical churches and I am almost entirely self-taught. I have only had a few students. I teach my students basic to intermediate drum beats and patterns, I teach them how to acquire coordination between limbs, I teach the basics of reading charts and patterns, and I teach how to make informed decisions when playing in a band setting.

Overview

I graduated from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music in 2012 with a BM in Composition. In the summers through college, I would teach music lessons and work at a summer camp with kids. For the past four years I've taught music part-time and I've worked at Disneyland performing for and interacting with kids. I occasionally sing with the Pacific Chorale at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. For the past two holiday seasons I've acted and sung full-time as a Christmas caroler with Mixed Company. With this company I got to sing at Disneyland for a both these season: a dream-come-true! I sometimes land small writing gigs: scoring short films, orchestrating songs, arranging, etc.
I do believe that I am also unique when teaching children. Apart from caroling at Disneyland, I also have part-time work there interacting with kids. Between those summers at that day-camp and this job at Disneyland, I've acquired a strong intuition with kids and how they process. This skill allows me to connect with them and hopefully share my love for music.

Available Mondays in or near Lake Forest

I live in La Mirada but I have a regular meeting on Monday nights.
