Fun Music Teacher

Piano Lessons

My mother is a Pianist so I grew up having lessons and playing the Piano. Any musician who would like to become more serious needs to be prolific in their Piano playing. I also use the Piano as a tool for ear training and visualizations for theory. I enjoy playing the Piano and use it as a way to relax when I am not playing my French horn. I love teaching Piano players of all ages!

Trumpet Lessons

After playing French horn for 3 years, I decided to try to play Trumpet. It ended up being very natural to me and so I performed on both Trumpet and French horn in High school. I played the French horn for our Orchestra and Wind ensemble and Trumpet for our Jazz ensemble. I fell into a position when I was 15 to be a brass coach of a Montessori school and taught mostly Trumpet for the 3 years that I was there.
Today, I play the Trumpet for fun!

Saxophone Lessons

Saxophone was the first instrument, aside from Piano, that I started to play. I started in 4th grade with this instrument until my middle school teacher in 6th grade asked me to switch to French horn. I continued to perform on Saxophone in our school's Jazz ensemble in Middle School and High School. I no longer play the Saxophone but can still teach students how to play the instrument!

Overview

Hi!
My name is Beckie and I have played music for all of my life. I play and teach many different instruments such as the Trumpet, French horn, Saxophone, Mandolin, Guitar, Clarinet, Voice, and Piano.

I graduated from Chapman University in 2010 with 2 degrees in music, Music Education and Music Performance on French horn. I am currently attending UCLA for my masters in Music Performance on French horn.

When I first began teaching, I taught at an elementary school for 3 years as a brass coach for a Montessori Academy. This is where I fell in love with teaching. I have been teaching privately for 12 years now and love the one-on-one attention that I can give the students.

I have worked for many great organizations like the Los Angeles Philharmonic and California Philharmonic.

I currently am a freelance musician. I perform regularly with two different orchestras and am in a Brass Ensemble called the Vine Street Brass and a horn ensemble called the Thursday Horn Club. I have performed in such wonderful venues as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Sydney Opera house, in which I was able to premier a piece!

I look forward to working with you or your child in helping to start or continue a musical instrument!
*** Lesson Details ***
When I teach lessons, I like to go at the pace of the student. I am very patient but I expect the student to practice during the week. I will always work with a student as long as it takes to have them understand what is difficult for them musically. I use a lot of different books like Teaching little fingers to Play and Standard of Excellence.

For Adults, I like the Big Beginners Piano book which has easy classical pieces to play!

I teach from the rudimentary skills and build on the fundamentals of music. After 3 or 6 months, my students feel accomplished with what they have learned and excited for the next 3 to 6 months!

I usually play my instruments with the students, but being a freelance musician, I may need to save my chops for an upcoming gig. Not always, but happens from time to time :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
practice space in home w/ seating for parents and music stand. I also have a cat and a dog, so if you are allergic, please let me know! The cat and dog are always put away during the lesson time.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have one music stand. I expect the student to provide the music books and their own instruments.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical genres of playing.

Questions and Answers

How do your lessons for adults differ from lessons for children?

My lessons different between Adults and Children based on books and what we want to get out of our lessons. For Adults, we usually know what pieces they would like to play and so I like to gear my teaching towards this. For younger students, I like to start with Theory so we can really understand our music and when more challenging music comes along, it is not so difficult.

Why are you a music teacher?

I love teaching. I am a teacher because I love sharing this gift of music. I love being able to take a student from not knowing any notes to being able to play a piece all on their own. It is a great joy for me to help a student through that process!

Why should I choose you as my teacher?

I really do love what I do! I like to have fun but I also get work done. I feel that I have had a lot of experience to know how to solve most problems and help students out in different ways. I know that everyone learns in a different way and I cater to these needs. I really invest in my students and I really care about how I can help them in our lessons.

What do you do during the first lesson?

During the first lessons, this is usually our getting to know you lesson. I like to ask about what our goals are, what we know, a little bit about the student personally. Usually a student does not have a book for lessons at this time, so we will choose a book based on what goals we have. If we have enough time, we will get to playing a few notes on our instruments!
