Professional Singing Lessons

Voice Lessons

Lessons typically last 45 or 60 minutes. The first 5-15 minutes will be spent warming up, and the rest is dedicated to working on rep, languages, music theory, and whatever else the student needs help with.
The voice is one of the most vulnerable instruments, as it uses not only your entire body, but also your mind and soul to create music. It is my goal as a teacher to give students a solid technique from which their musical expression can grow, and also to cultivate a love for music, in all its forms. I also aim to provide a safe space where students can perform and practice without judgment. I do not believe that the saying “no pain, no gain” applies to singing, and I will help to make sure that my students are singing naturally, in the way that the body is meant to be used.

Overview

Hello! My name is Megan, and I'm a Sacramento based professional singer. I grew up in nearby Davis, and after high school I went on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for four years. I graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. Since then, I've been living and working in the Sacramento area, teaching voice privately and working with kids. Music has had a profound impact on my life, and I would love to get the chance to help you get to know it a little better!

FAQs

What kind of students do you work with?

I'm happy to work with students of any age and at any level of experience, as long as they're ready and happy to start lessons.

Do you only teach classical music?

I think it's good to work with music from multiple genres. What's important is that the student like the piece we're working with, because this isn't just about learning a craft, it's about having fun. I encourage my students to branch out and try genres, composers, and songs that they might not have otherwise.

What happens in lessons?

Lessons are usually 45 to 60 minutes long and occur weekly at a regularly scheduled time. We spend the first 5 to 15 minutes working on a technical idea, and then the rest of the lesson applying that to the music, talking about what a piece means, analyzing, and occasionally choosing new songs.

How often will I need to practice?

Learning to sing isn't just about learning music, it's about learning to play an instrument you can't see, and learning how to practice is part of the process. All students will be expected to work on their music outside of lessons, but the amount of time you dedicate will depend on your level of experience and comfort.

Do I need to be able to read music?

Being able to read music is an integral part of being a musician, so any students who are unable to read music and learn a melody on their own are strongly encouraged to take piano lessons in addition to voice. I don't teach piano, but I'm happy to recommend a good teacher.
