Drums Lessons

We can go in any number of directions for drum lessons, but first you must learn how to count! I start beginning students out of a couple of my favorite method books, and then we move on to kit playing, for which I like to take a more ear-based, hands on approach. Listening to recordings is key!

Method Books:

Snare Drum for Beginners (Morris Goldenberg)
Stick Control (George Lawrence Stone)
Syncopation (Ted Reed)
Four-Way Coordination (Dahlgreen/Fine)
Accents and Rebounds (George L. Stone)
Master Studies (Joe Morello)
The Art of Bop Drumming (Riley)
The Art of Drumming (Kaufman)

Repertoire:

N.A.R.D. Drum Solos
Modern Rudimental Swing Solos for the Advanced Drummer (Wilcoxon)

Overview

Hi! My teaching approach focuses on individuality and student choice. I believe that musicianship must grow from a spark of excitement. In each lesson I work to help grow that spark into an enduring passion for learning and self expression.

I grew up in the Boston area, where I studied piano, drums, bass and guitar from an early age. The help I received along the way from teachers, friends and members of the community helped form a view that is central to my teaching: music excites, inspires, and connects people – music helps us to better ourselves through our relationships with others.

I attended the New England Conservatory, earning a degree in Jazz Performance. Shortly after graduating I moved to Chicago, where I lived for ten years. While based in Chicago, I toured throughout the United States and Europe with several bands. I also nurtured a ragtime piano obsession, committing all of Scott Joplin’s rags to memory. I'm still working on it!

I recently relocated to Los Angeles, where I have become involved in the local music scene and continue to teach!

Piano Lessons

I've been wanting to take lessons for years so I finally did and I was lucky enough to find Mark. He's very personable and enthusiastic. I never feel overwhelmed or rushed to learn (and I'm a very slow learner). Mark is affordable and flexible with my schedule and he's always on time. I always feel extremely happy and pleased after every session. He's a great teacher. I appreciate what he does for me.

Drums Lessons

I asked Marc to be my drum teacher after seeing him perform with his band, Wishgift. I started taking lessons with him right away (about 6 months ago), and ever since I've been getting compliments left and right about my drumming. I'm way more confident in my playing and feel like I'm constantly improving. He's very patient and always encourages me to do what's fun which keeps me motivated. I highly recommend him to any drummer who's just starting out or just looking to get better, he really knows his stuff! Here's my band, if you want to hear my level of drumming: https://notforyouchicago.bandcamp.com/
