Euphonium and Saxophone Lessons

Richard's lessons:

Saxophone, Clarinet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Saxophone Lessons

I start every lesson with some fundamentals. I'm a fan of the Breathing Gym for all wind players so I would start with this. I also think scale studies are an important area for all instrumentalists so this would be next on the list.

Euphonium Lessons

I'm a big believer in proper foundations at all levels so doing some exercises from both the breathing and brass gym in every lesson.

I think hearing a good characteristic sounds is also important so there will be points I play with them. most likely from a duet book.

If there aren't working on specific recital material I'll assign exercises and excerpts for them weekly. These will most likely come from a Rochut or Arbans book as well as other solo material that I see fit given their experience level.

I'll be teaching them how to practice technical passages by doing so with them. I will also be recording and posting videos of parts of their lessons so they can hear themselves as well as see their progress.

If at all possible, I'll have them perform for either their family or a friend as often as we can.

Educational Philosophy

My personal goal as an educator is to teach the whole student. Preparing every student for a life a consumer and lover of fine music is my goal. Giving my students all the resources and preparation they require should they decide they want to pursue a career as a music is how I plan to develop my curriculum and music program as a whole.

I believe one of the unique abilities I have as a music educator is that I can watch my students grow from a young age and develop a multi-year curriculum. Because of this, I take my role as an educator as one that extends past the classroom. Teaching my students how to be productive and responsible citizens is almost more important to me than the subject area. The lessons I teach in personal accountability, time-management, detail oriented work and community responsibility are ones that The students will remember far longer than whichever UIL pieces they play or marching shows they field. Through my curriculum, I intend to instill these character traits in all of my students.

As an educator, I keep in mind that how I approach every student matters. These individuals come from a myriad of backgrounds and have daily experiences just as diverse. I endeavour to treat each student with a highest level of love, compassion and understanding while demanding and equally high level of expectation. This is how I believe I can educate them best and have the greatest positive effect on their lives.
